SOONER THAN THE SUN

about

This song took an epic developmental journey. I loved it’s Doris Day like melody… but wanted it to be part of todays world of production. I was pretty new at producing my own stuff when I started this song and by the end I had some tricks up my sleeve. So this was one of the earlier songs written but one of the later songs to be finished. When Andrew Ryan added that seven note bass line, the end became clearer. Lyrically it was initially a reaction to being told I was no longer in the age bracket for a particular radio station. Being confronted with my own mortality was difficult considering that I already had all these identity adjustments going on post children. I wanted to stare into the face of things… and still come out smiling.

lyrics

Am I getting older?
the winter
comes sooner than the sun can say
long there is for listlessly waiting
to watch the fault lines fold away

and I have a few of them
creeping
in my neighbourhood
they are but the scores of
the lessons
that I’ve understood

and the people are strangers in the night
I don’t know how to see them right
caus they look like
all my friends and my foes
and the people close to me
never change as if they weren’t invited
to the pivotal debutant ball one throws

Now I’m getting older
every
great occasion I now wear
I am a gallery
of beautiful
celebrations laid to bare
Now I’m getting older
I’m taller
than I was before
Even though I’ve measured
I’m shrinking
on my kitchen door

and the people believing in the night
that distant stars are brand new light
well they’ve slept through
all the days I’ve seen
and the people close to me are kinder
and have travelled a
fair distance
caus the've gone with me
everywhere I’ve been

thank you to
the people who are there
just like air
and all the others thank you too
I’ve still grown through you.
